Whats Included
Recommended Handrail
We currently only recommend the use of a timber handrail with a base width of at least 65mm.
BlackLine PVD Wire Balustrade Kit #BP60 - A neat and slimline stainless steel balustrade kit for existing posts with M6 LHT and RHT on either end. Consists of Swage Stud Terminals (RHT and LHT) only. To be installed in this configuration between a LHT Post on one end and a RHT post on the other. Note: Image shown is of a 48mm terminal - the 35mm Terminal is shorter in both thread length and body length - see Kit #BP61 for the sizing of a 35mm terminal.
BlackLine Wire Rope - BlackLine stainless steel wire rope. In understated black for a modern wire balustrade or espalier system.
Commonly used used for wire balustrading, trellis/espalier systems and architectural applications, 3.2mm 1x19 stainless steel wire rope is the strongest of the standard wire rope constructions. It has over 800KG of break load.
It also has the least stretch over the same tension, compared with other constructions. As a result, over time you won't have to tension the wire as much, or run out of tension capability with your installed wire tensioners.
1x19 wire requires hydraulic crimping. It is commonly used with stainless swage fittings such as bottlescrews and swage terminals. It is the least flexible and does not allow for kinks or bends.
5T Light Duty Hydraulic Swaging Tool - This handy, easy to use light duty Hydraulic Swaging Tool is suitable for crimping (swaging) stainless steel, copper and aluminium fittings onto wire rope.
We commonly supply this tool for crimping M6 stainless steel swage fittings such as bottlescrews and swage stud terminals for 3.2mm wire.
You can also crimp copper swage fittings such as those for 3.2mm wire (use the #10 dies supplied). Bear in mind the crimp is in a hexagon shape as opposed to the rounded shape you will get with a mechanical swager.
This is a great, reliable little tool suitable for standard balustrade swaging.
Parrot Beak Wire Cutters - Wire rope cutters perfect for cutting wire rope up to 3.2mm diamater.
They cut cleanly with a precise one-hand shearing action that eliminates frayed ends.
Spanner Multi-Tool - Nifty multi-tool complete with spanner and bottlescrew tightening mechanism for M5 and M6 fittings.
Perfect for our common balustrade bottlescrews, lag screws and swage stud terminals. Due to its unique design the bottlescrew spanner fits perfectly between NCC standard 80mm wire spacing. This means you don't have to keep on readjusting the tool every time you twist it around the bottlescrew to avoid colliding with the wire. When you have a large number of tensioners to adjust, trust us, this can become a pain in the butt!
The solid nib will NOT snap off whilst you tension the bottlescrews up - we historically had a batch where the nib had not been manufactured properly and resulted in a spate of bad reviews of this product. This was quickly rectified. Rest assured, this product is a brilliant little tool and works perfectly.
High polish stainless steel 304 finish.
Black 12G x 25mm Countersunk Screws - Used for fixing timber handrail onto the top of the posts.
M10 Nylon Washers - Used for creating a inert material break between the stainless base plate fixings at the aluminium base plate. This helps reduce the likelihood of dissimilar metal corrosion.
Nylon Grommets - Used for creating an inert material break between the stainless wire and the aluminium intermediate posts.
Base Plate Fixing Options:
M10 Stainless 316 Hex Head Coach Screws - Used for fixing the base plate of the posts into timber decking and timber subframe.
or
M10 Stainless 316 Sleeve Anchor Hex Flange Nut - Used for fixing the base plate into a masonry surface. - Not suitable for all masonry surfaces or scenarios, talk to your local builder to get their recommendation.
DO NOT USE use in saline/salt prone environments especially areas subjected to salt spray from the coast. Any use within this environment will corrode the finish which cannot be rectified and will void any warranty. If your project is subject to this kind of environment, please contact us for clarification and alternative options.
Please note the use of hardened dies, heavy duty hydraulic swaging tools (including the 8T and 12T hydraulic tools) and other swaging procedures are not recommended as it will impact the finish of the final product and are not covered under standard product warranty.
Care Instructions
BlackLine Wire & Fittings
Avoid using harsh cleaners, chemicals and abrasives on and around the BlackLine wire and fittings. The blackened surface of the stainless steel may be stripped off, discoloured or degraded.
AVOID acid based cleaners such as oxalic acid (deck cleaner), vinegar or InnoShine B570 / InnoGel B450.
USE a mild, pH neutral cleaner, such as orange citrus or mild detergent with a non-abrasive cloth.
A darker sheen can be restored with light oiling.
Notes on Specifications
*Please note we can only give advice (including recommendations and quotations) that is general in nature. Although the NCC has sections on wire balustrading requirements, the requirements in your local area may be different. If you are unsure, it is best to seek advice from a local qualified professional who can assess your project's needs. It is Your responsibility to ensure your project meets regulations. We are a materials supplier only and not qualified to assess the specific needs of your project.
As a materials supplier, some products are made to common (standard) requirements across Australia, primarily driven through the most cost-effective way for overall project cost while inline with NCC specifications for Wire Balustrade requirements. For Posts, these are often pre-made as they can be sold to a wider market. This DOES NOT mean that that post specification is necessarily suitable for Your project. Local councils can (and have) stipulated different post and overall wire balustrade specifications.
If your project has different requirements send us through the information and we can often get products produced to meet those wire balustrading requirements. It may also be worthwhile having your builder, surveyor or engineer speak to us on these issues so we can sort out what you need. Our team is experienced in understanding balustrading requirements and getting posts, post attachments and wire balustrading made to suit.
See NCC 2022 Volume One for Commercial or Government Barriers and Handrail
See NCC 2022 Volume Two for Residential Barriers and Handrail, in particular ACBC Housing Provisions (HP), Part 11.3 Barriers and handrail
In all cases, the attachment of fasteners to a suitable concrete or timber supporting structure designed by others, must be independently verified for each installation.
